Bird Boy Volume 1: The Sword of Mali Mani

by Anne Szabla. Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse, 2016

This is the story of Bali, a small boy hoping to join others for the tribe's Smokewalk (a coming-of-age ritual he's physically too small for). He stumbles upon a legendary weapon (believed to be the legacy of hero Mali Mani) that could change everything.

Szabla borrows background and visuals from Vikings and Pacific Northwest tribes, and add much of her own to create a beautiful, engaging tale for all. While only very recently published, awards already include: 2017 Eisner Award for Best Webcomic.
