Xoc: The Journey of a Great White

by Matt Dembicki. Portland, OR: ONI Press, 2012

This book chronicles the life cycle of a female great white shark and her journey to give birth. Interestingly, it not only documents her journey (from the Farallon Islands approximately 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco to Maui - some 2000+ miles) but how the lives of other species (including but not restricted to humans) interact and impact upon hers.

It deals with biological and environmental issues and is a very powerful story. It can be used in science for: science as inquiry; and life science.

NOTE there is some blood and gore in a feeding frenzy.

See how to use this book to teach students to slow down and attend to details in Worth A Thousand Words: Using Graphic Novels to Teach Visual and Verbal Literacy (pp. 77-82).
